When we mention VR, what do you immediately picture in your mind? Perhaps immersive gaming or panoramic movies? The truth is that these are just the tip of the iceberg for VR application. VR can be used in many other scenarios, such as panoramic live broadcasts through aerial filming, teaching assistance, routine inspections, emergency rescue, and firefighting, provided that the network you use supports high bandwidth, low latency, and continuous mobility. Now, with VR supported by 5G MEC, these are all a reality.
During the International Horticultural Exhibition 2019 (Expo 2019) in Beijing, VR tour services took full advantage of 5G MEC. 5G-enabled drones with 360° panoramic 8K cameras flew around the venue, transmitting panoramic VR videos in real time. This was supported by the 5G MEC solution deployed at the Expo venue, which provided services such as video encoding/decoding, rendering, and streaming. With the drone-supported VR services, visitors were able to experience an immersive tour of the Expo.
